Splicing on new running rigging ...

Purchasing new running rigging for the Ranger 23 and my inexperience is showing.

I have spec'd out with ss thimbles for the halyards and boom topping lift

only to be told that this type of rigging usually calls for splicing without the thimble

I would have thought that the ss thimble would reduce wear ...

Thoughts please anyone as I am now even more confused ... and thanks

The topping you could do either way, the halyards I have never seen one done with a thimble just a small eye splice( with shackle attached).
These are very easily done your self. Just follow the directions on the site below. You might want to do a couple for practice but after you do one or two they come out very nice. How to Eye Splice double braid rope
You will save yourself $$'s for something else (rum )

I just did my first double braid splice the other night, a new leash for the dog.
I followed the steps outlined in the video below. With that said I have book-marked justified's link.
justified, thanks for that.

Good luck,
John

Tie knots.

Splices on a small boat are only for neatness and "smartness." Additionally, you will not be able to reverse the halyards or other lines to equalize wear. Splices wear at the masthead on some boats. I almost never spec splices (rope to chain on rode, but I do that one).

No, you don't want the thimble.

I don't have a comment about thimbles or not. A rigger might have a more useful opinion.

I did my own eye splices, bare if you want to know. The most helpful video on eye splices was posted, I think, by Knothead. He makes it look easy, and gave me courage to learn. It really is that easy.

I initially had problems using Uni-Fids, on which I had posted a heated rant some time ago. A simple modification made it easy to use on smaller rope. The hook normally extends quite a bit beyond the body diameter, and hung up on 5/16" line. Going through 1/4" double braid was impossible without the modification. A few gentle taps with a hammer closed the hook a bit, so that it is parallel with the shank. And then bend the shank near its root to bring the hook entirely behind the fid body. It should roll without wobbling on the hook when you're done.

Check these guys out:
Cajun Ropes
They probably have a running rigging kit all worked out for the Ranger 23 - good prices too!
Here's one for a 22 - you may have to talk to them for the 23.

I've bought off them often.

a sincere thank you to all that took the time to answer ...

I spent all day Friday (and I mean ALL day Friday) talking to riggers and visiting chandleries ... much of Friday night watching videos about splicing ... and tonight practicing splicing three strand rope for my new dock lines ...

I've decided to do the splicing myself ... got my old ss swivel hinges soaking in vinegar ... and use the money saved to help purchase the standing rigging I need

thanks for the tip ... already had checked them out and they don't have one for the Ranger 23 but I'm sketched out and measured each line individually ...
