Barlow 15 winch maintenance

I can't dissasemble my mizzen winches. It has an allen bolt inside the star shaped opening (where you would insert the winch handle). I turn and turn this bolt with an allen wrench but it does not seem to come out or even loosen up. I tried two different winches, same result. Any ideas?

Not familiar with that particular winch, but my small Barients come apart that way. My larger ST Barients have a threaded piece on the top that has two holes in it for inserting a special wrench. The Barients on my old boat had a circular spring ring that had to sprung out and then the drum would come off. Make sure yours don't come apart in one of these other ways.

When i removed my Barlow 18's it was by removing the allen screw in the center winch handle hole. The screw sits in a bushing at the bottom of the hole and removing it will allow the drum to be removed. It is unlikely that that screw would become stripped. The screw in mine was tightly threaded one was very stiff to turn. Hope this helps!
