Shaft Issue

Need to know the safest way to fill a shaft hole for a few years, have to take sailboat to Australia from NZ. (Immigration problem) have to leave very soon and dont have funds for a motor and transmission.

Don't want to leave the shaft in the boat, but plan to reinstall it later.

Have mounted new 15 Hp yamaha to rear of 32 ft. ferro silboat,

My plan is shorter s/s shaft with new forward and rear packings, with anode in the boat, and outside to keep the shaft in place, any advice would be appreciated, thanks Ron.

The anode may not be best choice as they eventually fall off. Given zero prop area, it might not be an issue. A piece of rubber hose and a couple of hose clamps on the inside will keep it from going out. To keep it from coming in, clamp a piece of line under the previously mentioned hose clamps and secure it to something in the boat, such as the hose clamps around your stuffing box. If you want something more like the anode solution, they make stainless shaft collars. I'd get the variety called a clamp collar in the US. My $.02.

Wood bung inside the the tube, and pipe caps inside and outside;
Fernco Plumbing Pipe End Caps, fernco, fernco plumbing, fernco fitting, fernco pipe connectors, Cleanout Caps, Open Test Pipe Caps, Fernco Qwik Cap, Waste Pipe End Cap, Drain Pipe End Cap | Fernco
When you are ready to install the new shaft just take pipe caps off and knock the bung out.

If you can't get the pipe cap on the outside, just fill the end with structural fiberglass filler and drill it out when you put the shaft back in.
