patio deck stain???

We recently purchased our boat, a brand new 18 year old Norsea 27. The boat has been in a barn unfinished for the last 18 years.

She has some unfinished teak on deck and I was thinking about varnish then dismissed that. Considered Semco then thought why not common household patio deck stain/preservative? Boats and the patios are out in the weather 24/7, both get wet and both get walked on. Any thoughts?

Regards
Jerry

the beauty of teak decking is the natural non skid when wet.. you really don't want to loose that by sealing it with anything.

Agree with Denise to leave any teak decking natural. If however its decorative pieces other than decks, and you don't want varnish, then Cetol would be my suggestion. A semi-transparrent house deck stain may work, but the $ are small in the overall scheme of things so why take a chance.

Sorry for the poorly worded post, the teak is the cap and toe rail, bow pulpit, hatches and handrails. The deck is gel coat.

Ever thought of a 2 part teak cleaner to bring back the original colour then starbrite teak oil. looks great with easy maintenance. I have sold many members at my club into doing this. it also keeps the grain of the teak at bay

The color of the teak is just fine since the boat hasn't been exposed to UV.
I really don't appreciate the gray look of teak.

I have found that many of the outdoor stains are just fine for marine uses...you can even buy cetol at Lowe's around here.. Get one for oily/teak type woods...as teak is a bit of a different beast compared to pressure treated most decks are made of.

I use Cetol on my Nor'Sea's teak. Not as pretty as varnish but it lasts a little longer. Here in central FL a couple of coats will last about a year.

Staining teak gives me the shivers. You may not care or even like it, but 99% of those you might want to sell your boat to one day will care. No practical way of turning back. If you don't like grey teak, I would pick a varnish or similar brightwork application or oil it.

Jeanneau 54DS

In the harsh marine environment, something is always in need of repair. Margaritas fix everything.
