Outboard Motor Mounting MADNESS!

Or OMMM for short.

Story: I bought an Oday 25 1976 this April. Last year, the previous owner sold the original motor and bought a late 90s/Early 00 Mercury, 5hp, 2 stroke. I think the previous motor was larger. She mentioned that it was mounted a little too high and popped out of the water some. It came with this type of mounting: Garelick EEz-In

The motor WAS poping out every time we hit a wave, so I thought I was smart and replaced that black plastic part on the mounting with a piece of pressure treated wood, screwing it in near the top of the wood rather than the bottom. This turns out to not be a stable situation, the screws are in the way of the gripper thingie.

Now I'm noticing that the spring things on the mounting (metal, toward the bottom) are broken and one fell off, and it's actually only screwed into the boat in two places - the bottom left and top right. If one of those pop my motor is will fall in the water. I tied it up with rope in the meantime, but...

It seems like I should just replace the mounting. It's messed up, and when the plastic part was on, it never could get in the water deep enough, no matter how low I set it. I'm not sure if I could get new springs to repair it anyways. I assume I could remove the mounting, get new springs, screw it into the boat lower, fill up the old holes, but this seems crazy.

QUESTION!

The marine store told me that I CANNOT get a mounting like this: Garelick EEz-In because it's rating is 7.5hp up. They said that my mercury would not be heavy enough to hold it into the water. Is this true? Can I duct tape some bricks to it or something? :-P I need the longer REACH that these larger brackets seem to have, but they all seem to be rated for larger motors. I'd like to keep the option open for getting a larger motor someday, too.

I'm tempted to get something like this: Garelick EEz-In and mount it exactly where I need it. I don't think I'd miss the up& out function too much, I'm strong enough to lift the motor if I'd need to.

Suggestions, advice, critisicm welcome. I'm not sure if this is really a good motor for my fat-a$$ oday anyways.

It looks like your store was kind of right. They have different mounts for different weight engines. The store must have been talking about the 71057 which is indeed for 7.5hp to 20hp, as below. However, they should have just told you you need the 71040 which is for engines up to 59 lbs.

71040**: H.P. Rating: To 8 Motor Weight Not to Exceed: 59 lbs. Vertical Travel*: 8 1/2” (22cm) Mtg. Pad: Poly Mounting Board Dimensions W x H x T: 11 1/2” x 10 3/4” x 2” (29 x 27 x 5cm) Mounting Brkt Dimensions W x H: 5 1/4” x 9” (13 x 23cm)
71057: H.P. Rating: Over 7 1/2 to 20 Motor Weight Not to Exceed: 115 lbs. Vertical Travel*: 11 1/4” (29cm) Mtg. Pad: Poly Mounting Board Dimensions W x H x T: 11 1/2” x 10 3/4” x 2” (29 x 27 x 5cm) Mounting Brkt Dimensions W x H: 5 1/4” x 9” (13 x 23cm)
71042: H.P. Rating: Over 7 1/2 to 12 Motor Weight Not to Exceed: 82 lbs. Vertical Travel*: 14 1/4” (36cm) Mtg. Pad: Poly Mounting Board Dimensions W x H x T: 11 1/2” x 10 3/4” x 2” (29 x 27 x 5cm) Mounting Brkt Dimensions W x H: 5 1/4” x 9” (13 x 23cm)

If I'm right, which I'm frequently not, the mount includes a spring, the purpose of which is to counteract the weight of the motor and make the o/b easy to lift.

However, even if the o/b is not heavy enough to counteract the spring, you should be able to push the o/b down against the spring and have the lever lock. Swells should not make the o/b lift, as the lever locks in the down position (and the up one of course).

Why your old bracket doesn't lock properly I don't know. Because it's broken? User error? Are you locking it in the down position?

Thanks for your reply. If I get that one, I'm only getting the reach of 8 inches. I suppose if I mounted it lower on the boat than the previous one, it would work, but I don't know if I'm supposed to drill new holes (or HOW)

I had a Coronado 25 with a 6hp 2 stroke. In my opinion it was OK in mild conditions but marginal for SF Bay and outside ocean conditions. Changed to a 15HP 2 stroke and it was plenty, 9.9 HP may have been enough? As the 15HP was the same size and weight as the 9.9 I went for the 15. Power is good when things turn nasty!! As the Coronado had a well I have no experience with brackets other than watching others with transom brackets have their props screaming out of the water. If you re-power suggest you get the longest shaft available with a "high thrust" prop.

The motor almost went under on the temp Cal29 mount as the stern squats pretty deep under power and it still poped out once

No matter how deep you mount it it pop out of the water in some conditions

The springs can be REALLY STRONG as some of the new motors are pushing a 100 pounds

If a dirty bottom slows you down what do you think it does to your boat

@ Tommays - the problem was that it was popping out often, and wasn't "peeing" due to not being in deep enough, I had to take it to the mechanic and we think that damaged it some. The propeller was only 1-2 inches below the water.
That 2nd picture is interesting - did you have it mounted on the ladder? How'd you rig it up like that?

I would see what length the motor is ,you would measure from the mounting clamps down to the plate

It would be 15 /20 / 25 if its 15 you going to have a problem with any mount
