Open CPN is cool. Why did no-one tell me before?

I've been using the hand held for looking up tides and currents, and it's a PITA. It's also very tedious creating routes and waypoints on the thing.

I just downloaded OpenCPN and the charts from NOAA.

So much easier to use. I particularly like being able to open numerous current charts at once, for comparison.

I haven't used it for route planning yet but it looks very easy.

That's all.

Sorry I couldn't tell you, cause I don't know what it is. I'm using paper charts and tide tables.

Free software, that together with free downloadable charts from NOAA, allows you to peruse charts on a computer.

Try Polar Navy, too. I found it easier to use than Open CPN. Free to download for planning and a one-time minimal cost to connect to your GPS. We've been using it on our boat for about three years with no problems with a netbook.

DRFerron, thanks for the information on "Polar Navy". Looks good so far. The price is also reasonable.

Is it the same as a gramophone record?
