Old Yacht Specialty Pedastal guard

If anyone has ever removed a yacht specialtly pedastal guard, (the old 12.5" on center guards) I would like some tips on what to expect. For instance is it possible to remove the bolts that fasten the legs to the deck and slide it out of the top plate? Or will I have to remove the compass and top plate.
