I think I know exactly what you are talking about. It is a red plastic indicator that looking from the top has an elongated triangular shape. It has a "V" profile. I also seem to recall that the indicator had holes in it along it's length. I was mounted with straight stainless rod that was threaded into the top of the mast and had a knurled locking nut on it. I also am recalling a stainless counter weight on the back side.
We used them on racing dinghies all the time and would remove them every time we unstepped the mast (which was all the time since they were trailered to different regattas. It worked great.
Amazingly, I looked and found what I remembered. My recollection was pretty close to what it looks like.
