Hello all
i just purchased an 80s danica 16
Basically a full keel slightly longer BC made version on a Nordica with a taller cabin, and higher combings
i just did some repair work inside and got it all skookum
it seems the mast and boom were replaced at some point, though the sales are original (i believe)
I can't find specs for mast diameter and length anywhere, even on the nordica website
i'd really like to know the actual dimensions of a stock mast and boom to see if it the one i have is appropriate
Also The boom has rather mickey mouse end fitings on it right now and the mast bottom is just bare (No bottom!)
If there's any other Danica owners out there pictures of the mast step, gooseneck and mast and boom ends would be greatly appreciated, i have access to aluminum welding facilities so i'm going to make the proper mast and boom end fittings myself

I can't understand why you have been unable to join this group. I am the group moderator and I cannot recall that you have applied to become a member. we have a number of other Danica owners. Give us another try!
There's a Nordica a few slips over from me, I'll try to get a couple of pics, and perhaps pop in a tape measure near the base.
As to the mast bottom being open, I don't think there's supposed to be anything blanking off the bottom of it. The mast on my Catalina 22 is "bare" as well.

It's definitely not the original mast though it could be the same dimensions

I don't think it would be a watertight cap, more of a solid base, all the boats I've had so far FJ, Mutineer, Crown 18(litte cal 20) have all had some sort of fitting on the bottom of the mast
In the latter 2 a built in plate with a hinge type arrangement for stepping the mast (THe FJ was a drop in but it had a fitting too)
I've never actually seen an open ended bare pipe bottom to a mast before

Here's a couple of pictures from a friend's Nordica 16. I can't say if everything is factory, but I'm guessing that there haven't been many changes since new.

I hope you got your rigging resolved. I have a question about the backstay. I have to resolve it before I put my new little Danica in the water.

My poor Danica Nutmeg has sat idle for a couple years! Maybe this year.
As far as I know Danica's don't have backstays
Mine (and all the others I've seen) have a forestay and 2 shrouds a side
I leave my shrouds attached all the time and then lever the mast up on it's pivot (with the jib halyard attached to the bow) Tighten the jib halyard when it's all the way up and then go attach and tighten the forestay. That should be it.
Thank you, Windkiller. Your boat looks fabulous. I'm still trying to figure out the outhaul system and the topping lift. There's a wire (which I thought was a backstay) that might be the topping lift, although it is too long. It has a split chain on the end. I can't figure out where or how it was attached.
Also, is there another piece to the gooseneck or is this it - what I have in the photo?

I guess I need more information.
One thing is these boats are all 30-40 years old. They were made by Peter Hahn in North Vancouver. I talked to him on the phone once. I believe he lives on Saltspring Island? Anyway He made them with what parts were available. for example mine has opening Brass portlights because he got a great deal on some from an auction. Many have more rectangular non-opening portlights. Some have kitchenettes? So many variations. I believe about 25 were made.
I'm not sure if mine had the original mast, nor yours, For example you have a squarish looking boom, while mine is teardrop shaped.
Do you have an pictures of your entire mast that shows the lines on it ?
Do you have the normal amount of stays? (5)
Mine (and everyone I've seen, about 5 or 6) has a forestay, and 2 shrouds on either side , so 5 stays in total, none of which is a backstay. Nothing with chain attached. On a boat the size of a Danica, the only place I would want to see chain is attached to the anchor...haha Here is another ridiculous picture which shows that a little better.
I think mine had a goofy arrangement for the boom attachment so I found one at a local used marine store(now sadly defunct) that did the job much better. I have had my boat out in pretty string conditions. Happily you can heave-to in a Danica..neat.
My topping lift is a light line that does the job admirably. Not wire.
As far as an outhaul goes I think I have a little block at the end of the boom and a jam cleat (I believe) a bit inboard. I also have a reefing setup too but that's a different thing.
Thank you so much for the history and information. My boat does have 5 stays (plus this "extra"). Here are two pictures. The second one appears to have the "backstay" rigged to the rear starboard side..... hmmm.
That would be some sort of modification then as it's not standard on a Danica's rig as far as I know.
Somebody did a nice job on that one Did you buy it on the west coast? It looks like one this fellow I know "Marty Loken' restored.
I bought it in Aylmer Quebec, across the river from Ottawa. The gentleman's name was not Marty. I think in the photo, he may have just hooked that extra stay onto the back cleat. I think I might remove it and add a line for the topping lift as you suggested. I'm gonna try to get it on the water tomorrow - can't wait!

Yes the backstay is unnecessary.
A light block up top and something to cleat it to at the bottom of the mast is all you need for a topping lift.
I was wondering about the boat as the aluminium ports looked like restoration additions. Nice job and looks to be in great shape. Very stable fun and stout little boat. Excellent for camp cruising. I wish I had a decent tow vehicle right now and I'd take mine out.
