Replacing foam on couches and V berth

The foam on my saloon couches and the V berth is getting old, in some places it is firm and some it is soft.

The covers aren't in bad shape.

I'd be interested to hear what other people have done to replace the foam, any positive vendor experience, and any advice you have.

The options seem to be, in order of cost :

1) Go to local foam shop, keep the covers. (blue velour)

2) Order online from an RV-type custom cushion place, with new covers

3) A local marine upholstery specialist.

The only problem I have with (1) is that I'd like to make the cushions thicker, and with the old covers I'm limited to the 4" or so I have right now.

Why not use the old covers, with some new foam inside, and add a few inches of high density foam (with or without covers) underneath the cushions? That way the added foam will be hidden from view, but you'll still get the increased cushioning.

Good idea, would certainly work for the V berth.

As far as foam from afar being cheaper/better I called the local foam shop. I compared their price against an internet vendor up in Brooklyn Park, MN 55428. A 2"x24"x72" firm piece local is $20.00 + 2.00 for tax while the internet guy wants $31.88 plus shipping.
Pays to shop.

I just redid all my foam in the salon from a local vendor for around $40 a cushion for 4" foam using my old covers. I took all the cushions down and they cut and replaced them all in the same day. The foam I used is one the best on the market. It made a world of difference.

I sewed new cushions for the salon and v-berth (plus a few practice pillows), with new foam for about $350. I had very little sewing experience. A video from sailrite for a few bucks, gave some good advise. Obviously this took a 'number' of hours.
