What kind of bottom paint do I have?

I bought a boat but don''t know what type of bottom paint is on it (ablative vs hard).Is there a way to tell?

Owner is gone and bought it out of state so backtracking is a challenge.

I looked thru the archives but can''t find the answer.

Rub your hand vigorusly over the paint. If lots of it comes off on your fingers it probably an ablative paint (although I have seen sprayed-on epoxy paints slough very much like ablatives.)

A week ago I brushed the bottom with a scotchbrite type pad. I got a cloud of paint in the water. Does this sound like ablative paint or would a hard finish do the same when cleaning?

If you got lots of paint in the wayer and paint residue on the scrubber, it''s an ablative.
