I was able to peel off a considerable about of tape using a credit card in one hand to keep it coming up. The credit card seems to be the best scraper.
The key for me was starting with the easiest parts. If I started with the hard parts the job would have seemed impossible. I also got better when I reached the hard parts.
On the most difficult sections there was no way to avoid using a metal scraper.

Were you using regular blue "multi-day" masking tape, like 3M? I've used miles of that stuff and never been unable to soak it with WD40.
It sounds like you were using something else.
