broadband 3G radar

I have bought a Simrad 3G radar and am trying to figure the best height to mount it on the mast. According to the 3G/4G manual it is best to mount it so that you get a clear view from the radar beam at a 25 degree angle down. Less acceptable is an angle from the radar of 12.5 degree according to the pictures. So to me the specs should be a vertical beam width of 50 degrees not the 25 degree that is listed?
For the Simrad 2K radar the specs say it is a vertical beam width of 30 degrees and their pictures show that the radar should have a clear view of 15 degrees.
If this is correct it appears that the broadband has almost twice as much vertical beam width. Does this seem right?
Last point, if this is true then I would guess that broadband radar would be less susceptible to heeling affecting the quality of the radar signal? If so I would be more likely to go to a fix mount vice self leveling.....

thanks for any input,

Richard

I'm no expert, Richard, but I installed the 3g on a fixed post on the stern which places it about 11 feet above the water. My Freedom 38 doesn't heel much but I did get the post (with an arm to raise the outboard) from Garhauer (sp?) which included a manual leveling device at an excellent price and quality.

I have the same system a sEreiss from Garhauer. Its a well constructed radar mast with a detachable engine hoist ( 6X1 purchase). I highly recommend it as well. Radar sits 11 ft off the deck.with a hoop which we have attached our stern light as well as TV antennae to. I will probably move our two Chartplotter antaneeas out there also to unclutter my stern rail some.

I also have their dinghy davits which are also well designed and constructed.

Re: broadband 3G radar

Hey all, I just purchased the nss8 and a 3g broadband radar from simrad. I already have a stern radar pole on my 34 foot sailboat. The diameter of the pole is 2 and 3/8's inches, and is approx. 10 feet high. Does anyone know if the pole will be strong enough to support the weight of the dome? Also, since the mast will be approx. 15 feet forward of the dome, will the radar portray the mast on my display? Thanks for any help.
