Cracks in Deck At Mast Base

Well, that was depressing.

I just got back from a quick stop by the marina to check on the boat. Too cold to take the wife sailing and not enough time to get any real work done. In the process of the inspection I found, to my utter horror, two wet spots the size of my thumb soaking through the headliner just to the starboard side of the socket that holds the compression post.

As you might imagine, I’m moderately horrified. Is the coachroof of the Potter-19 solid fiberglass there, or is it cored? There are some cracks in the deck above that I was hoping were cosmetic, but I fear are not. I will be taking the hi-rez camera out there tomorrow to take some pictures for you and start the diagnostic process.

We’ve had a LOT of rain lately, both of the light-but-steady variety and the buckets-from-the-sky variety.

I had about two inches of standing water in the bilges and there was condensation dripping off of other parts of the interior.

Can you give me any insight?

Their may be fasteners in the mast step that are leaking.
If the compression post is wood you want to check it for rot.
Also you can ask the factory and the users group.
If it has happened to your boat it has likely happened to others.
