i think that is one of the things I like most about cruising abroad--having to track down parts or services really gives you a look into the heart of a city. yesterday I also had an pleasant experience with the guy from the bearings store--he didn't have the needle bearing i needed (for a steering pedestal rebuild) but he walked me three blocks down to a competitor he thought would be able to help me. goes to show that there are great people everywhere!...especially true here in Chile. in addition to that, Jose the sailmaker showed up yesterday evening at 7:30pm and created a full mock-up of a new dodger for me and promised to have it stitched by Tuesday! great people, strange hours.

Stress concentration is one thing, but a hole as large as proposed may actually cause the mast to buckle at the hole, a very different sort of failure.
