Palmer Engine

I recently purchased a 1974 Islander 30 MK II with a Palmer gas engine, runs great no problems. Should I be using a lead additive in the fuel or a multi purpose additive,,,,,,,,,,,any suggestions would be appreciated,

I am not sure why you would want to add a lead additive to a gas engine. I do not have a gas engine on a boat but was under the impression that you do not want lead in a gas engine.

Had a Palmer 1980-2002. You need to use a "lead substitute" additive; MDR offers one; there are many others. Also need to use pure unleaded, i.e. no ethanol.

IIRC, the lead acted as a "cushion" for the valve and seat contact. Older engines may suffer valve related problems without an addetive. I had an older Continental flat head engine and had to go with stellite valve seat inserts and stainless valves, or maybe the reverse? It was a long time ago.

Forgot, I think the lead was also supposed to help lubricate the valve guides.

The Palmer gasoline engines are pretty cool, old, simple engines. A distant cousin to my Atomic 4 in some ways.
For starters you can ignore postings from people who say they do not have a gasoline engine on their boat.
40 year old gasoline engines were not engineered for lead free gas with ethanol as a bogus additive of up to 10%. When we got our Atomic 4 that came with our 43 year old Tartan 27' the previous owner (PO) left a can of lead substitute on board and I think our old engine likes it. I'm not sure about the Palmer but for the Atomic 3 or 4 we also routinely put some Marvel Mystery Oil (~ 5W light oil) in the gas and even into the cylinders for extra lubrication and rust protection.
As previously suggested it would be nice to be able to use non-ethanol tainted gasoline but that is not always possible, easy or cheap (unless you have access to a recreational airfield).
The photo below shows the last gallon or so I pumped out of our 20 gallon fuel tank after nearly 10 years of using E-10 gasoline that mostly sat around. The black stuff on the bottom is mostly water and I'm not even sure if my engine could burn the amber stuff sitting on top.

Hey thanks for the info. Thus far we have been happy with our Palmer 60. Plan on using some lead additive and how much Marvel Mystery Oil do you use per 5 gallons of gas. Any suggestions would be helpful,,,,,,,,,,,many thanks and happy sailing

The additive is probably good. Not sure about the oil? Too much may cause bad deposits on the underside of the valves, limiting flow. If you want to add oil, 2 stroke water cooled designated oil may be better? Not sure if Marvel would burn off as well? Suggest no more than 100:1 mixture if that much.
If you see any smoke out of the exhaust you may be using too much oil.

Didn't use Marvel Mystery for my Palmer. Do use it for my rebuilt Atomic 4 as recommended by the rebuilder (Moyer Marine), at 2 ounces per 5 gallons. Probably would have been just as useful for the Palmer too, had I known about it back then.

Yes, using Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO) in the fuel is not my idea but Don Moyer's (rebuilder extrodinare of Atomic 4 engines). I believe it is the rust inhibiting properties of the MMO as well as the extra lubrication which are beneficial to the piston rings and valves.
I have heard of some people using the blue 2 stroke oil as well.
2 ounces per 5 gallons of fuel sounds about right.
I also use MMO to fog the cylinders for winter layup. This can cause a slightly smoky exhaust for a short time during spring commissioning but hey, it is a 43 year old engine - it is supposed to smoke a little.
