Flying an oversized spinaker
Hey all,
I searched the message boards quickly here but couldn't find what I was looking for. After a quick google seach to no avail I've decided to post my question. I bought a 1977 Buccaneer 200. She came in excellant condition with main, jib, 150% genoa and a symetrical spinaker. I've never sailed with a spin before but I ordered the parts to set up the rig. I plan to add a sock but I'd like to see how this turns out...My I and J dimensions are 25.8' and 8.0'. The spinaker that came with the boat has a luff of 33.25' and a foot of 17.3'... I'm aware that this sail is a bit (;)) oversized...What's going to happen when I deploy this cargo-sized 'chute? Thanks, Matt |
That's VERY oversized, I think you're going to have problems with sheeting angles, especially reaching. The luff is so long the pole may as well be an on-deck sprit, and even then it's going to drag in the water anytime the breeze drops. If it pipes up you're really going to have a handful.
I'd put that sail on Craigslist or equivalent and shop for a more apporpriate one. |
Ultimately I think Im going to end up selling the sail. The wreckless part of me just wants to push this button though.
With almost 40% of my boat being the ballasted keel due to previous owners removing the interior, I'm not all too concerned with capsizing. THAT being said, I think I'm still going to board up the cabin when I give this a shot. |
Is your boat self-bailing???
