Roller furling jib on a trailerable?

Any trailerable sailors using a roller furling jib? Seems to be an easy and inexpensive set up. However the complications of raising and lowering the mast seem to be the issue. Would love to hear how you overcome this. Thanks.

Hey

My Catalina 22 came with a roller furled. I would leave the sail on an rolled up. No problems stepping and unwrapping the mast with the sail on

There must be thousands of MacGregor owners out there with furlers on their trailerable boats and they all do it with ease, including myself. Google MacGregor 26 and you should find a few blogs. Try this one.

You can bungie the furler to the mast easy enough for trailering or use a length of PVC extrusion to cradle the section of furler that extends off the bow with mast down. It is not all that difficult really.

nc,

I have have roller furled genoa with extrusion (CDI FF2) on my 26 foot trailer sailor. Stepping and unstepping the mast is not a problem. You just have to control the unattached drum end of the forestay during the process. I simply use the furler control line pulling forward to keep the end from flopping around. And as Kermie says, lash it to the mast when it's down.

I added one to my Wayfarer. I used the Harken small boat furler which has no foil, it just uses the wire luff of the jib. You need a jib with the luff wire stitched in. Raising and lowering the mast was easy as the jib halyard was internal to the mast, and came out of the mast inside the boat. Therefore all you had to do was stand in the boat, raise the mast, then pull on the jib halyard and cleat it off.

The Wayfarer was designed for 'shooting" bridges, where you need an easily lowerable and raisable mast. You were supposed to be able to sail towards a bridge, drop the mast at the last second, pass under the bridge, then put it up, all from the cockpit while steering. I never tried this!

When towing I would lash the jib & furler to the mast.

I have a Catalina 25 on a trailer with roller furler and Genoa 150. I use an A frame to step the mast and have a crutch in the stern with a roller. I can raise/lower with cockpit winch by myself. Roller on crutch allows me to disconnect the mast at the step and walk it forward to store for travel. I use the halyards to wrap the rolled sail to the mast. A frame and crutch are easily stored in the salon or truck bed.

The H 26 I had came with the CDI furler. At the end of the season before hauling the boat out of the water, I would remove the sail,while leaving the furler attached. After securing the mast and furler, I would put a couple of heavy large ziploc bags over the drum and then tape them across the opening.
