Hull Number Not Readable (Hardly Visible)

Some PO of my "new" Montgomery 15 has filled the imbedded hull number on the starboard stern. I cannot even read it. I believe it has been filled with some sort of poly or epoxy filler.

I have and know the number and am wondering what the best way to is to clean out the filled in number.

Would a dremel tool work?

Must it be readable under penalty of law, or should I not worry about it?

I'd leave it until someone with a good reason REALLY wants to see it, and other than a survey nobody has ever asked to look at one of mine.

The HIN should be on your transom AND somewhere inconspicuous somewhere else on the vessel (redundancy to protect against fraud). I'd check a Monty owners website or if you can talk to the builder they may give you a clue. My last boat had it imprinted in the hanging locker.

as silly as this sounds, a piece of tracing paper and a pencil/piece of charcoal may bring the 'filled in' bit to life.

good luck
