Re: PSS Dripless black spray

When you burp a PSS, should you put any grease under the seal? I've not had one, but have similar dripless seal that does suggest grease. The black has to be coming from something. It would creep me out.

In the harsh marine environment, something is always in need of repair. Margaritas fix everything.

Minne,

The black is simply graphite that is wearing off of the face of the bearing/seal.

The installation instructions for my PSS seal specify to keep it free of grease, as it could cause leakage. The graphite splatter is normal.
I recommend checking the set screws periodically. The collar had moved about 1/4 " and reduced the pressure of the bellow against the graphite on my boat and started leaking heavily. Luckily I was onboard and heard the water, or I would have needed scuba gear to get down into the cabin.
I now have a mark on the shaft where the collar should be and check periodically for tightness.

When I haul the boat out later this year, I am replacing the traditional stuffing box with a PSS dripless system. I plan to use a Ruland clamp collar as Maine Sail suggests. The Ruland Clamp Collar photo - Compass Marine photos at pbase.com This seems like pretty cheap insurance against collar slippage.
