Location, location, location....for aux mic plu location.

Last summer we purchased a new Icom VHF radio for the boat. It has the capability of having an external mic. Part of our current issue is that when we need to talk to folks on the radio for directions involving landmarks or stuff, I can't see from the cockpit where they are talking about from below. Also, with the motor going, it is difficult to hear talking on the radio below. We have a hand-held VHF that use int he cockpit sometimes, but if it it is windy it is difficult to hear and it's range is 5 nm or less.

So, to go with the new base radio we bought the plug-in external commandmic and now looking for the optimal place for the external plug location. The admiral and I discussed it yesterday, but couldn't come up with a location.

Our boat is a Pearson 10M, which has the wheeled helm forward. One idea was to put the plug port just inside the companion way and the mic holder on one of the just out side on the cabin cockpit "wall". The other idea was to put the plug just under the Autopilot control head, which just to the left of the companion way. The issue with any these locations, is that the cord cuts directly across the companion way access. The other issue with the location under the autopilot control head is that takes away a seating area when the mic is being used.

The only other location would be directly on the helm, with the plug port on the bridge deck bulk. This could be ideal, but I would need to build a holder and I don't have that much room for mounting something on the helm posts.

We would only use the mic on a limited basis and plug it in when necessary.

Looking for ideas.

Thanks.
