What rudder will fit a Catalina 22?

Hello all. I just acquired an 83 Catalina 22 and in the market for a rudder and tiller. It came with a kickup style rudder but got lost in transit by PO. My question is will a rudder from a similar boat fit? I will be working close to a marina/boat salvage next week and would like to find a couple things and a rudder being one of them. I called today and asked them about 2 boats that was listed on their website and they said they werent parting either of them out but one was clearly a parts boat so I'm hopin once I'm there they will reconsider...the guy I talked to said come on over and I could walk the yard so I figure that means they will work with me. They have tons of boats so maybe I will get lucky. Anyone with a little expertise in this area?

If you don't find a rudder to salvage you can order a new one from Catalina Direct, I've ordered from them and was very happy with both service and prices.

I've looked at CD but the salvage yard said I was looking at $75-$150 depending on condition. One of the boats on the site looks to be in pretty good shape so maybe I'll get lucky. I'd like a backup plan though.

The C22 rudder is transom mounted. So you could possibly make some rudder other than from a C22 fit. There are also tons of C22 out there, there has got to be at least one that would be willing to go rudderless!

But I would imagine that you'll be able to find C22 parts around if you look a bit and are able to do some rehabilitation. If you do find a C22 rudder, make sure that the pintles are good. Some of them (like mine) have a steel pin set in aluminum, and they can suffer from galvanic corrosion. On my old one, the aluminum turned powdery and was breaking off in chunks before I replaced it.

Thanks for the advice. I don't mind doing a little wood work but the metal work is not for me. I'll be sure to check the pintles. The good thing about those are replacements aren't terribly expensive on CD.

I guess if I found one really close in style and size i could get the gudgeon off of the donor boat provided the mounting holes are the same. Hopefully I'll find what I'm looking for and won't have to go with one from another boat. There are lots of Cats to be had as I'm finding out with every search so she'll have her steering back in no time.
