Nissan or Tohatsu 6 question

Happy Monday all! I hope lots of you had at least one good sailing day this weekend. We had a beautiful day out followed by a nearly catastrophic return.

My Coronado 25 has a 2011 Nissan 6hp LS.

As we motored down the canal, I started my turn into my slip and then went to bump my engine into reverse to slow us to a gentle halt. Unfortunately, there was no reverse to be had! Luckily, I somehow was able to think quickly enough to spin around the engine and tiller to get us pointed back into the canal, at which point I shut off the engine and we coasted a hundred yards or so until I found a dock we could slid into sideways to assess the situation.

It turns out that the shift lever rod broke, and so we were stuck in forward. It looks pretty cheaply made, just two tiny little points of contact to hold the rod to the two pieces of metal that held it to the actual shifter knob.

Has anyone else had this problem? I'm ordering two to have one on hand for a replacement. Also, it seems a little tough to get into reverse. True for anyone else?

Nelson

There is a great forum for Outboard Motor questions on iBoats. The link for Honda, Nissan and Tohatsu is Honda & Tohatsu/Nissan Outboards

Great resource for anything you ever w3anted to know about these engines.
