Head Priming Issue

Hello All,

I have a Groco HF manual head in our sailboat. I recently discovered that our vented loop was clogged. After fixing this problem the head will not stay primed. Pumping will not bring water into the bowl.

Thinking I would need to manually prime the pump, I held the vented loop below the waterline to bring water to the pump. The head works properly, but if I raise the vented loop above the waterline, even while pumping with the line primed, I immediately lose the prime and the pump stops brings water to the head. There is a small U directly below the pump, about 8'' of hose, which I assume would be enough to help keep the pump primed.

Is it possible that my pump is shot, and doesn't have the strength to pull water over the vented loop? The loop is about 8'' above the waterline. Or is there something else I am missing.

In summary, my head works perfectly without a vented loop, but with one properly installed my head will not bring water into the bowl, but will still empty.

Thanks for any advice,

Matthew

Sounds like the loop is on the inlet side. Read the section on vented loops here on this.

Thanks, that is right. I will just move the loop to between the pump and the toilet, because we do have a siphon problem if we leave the pump in the wet position.

Thanks again,

Matthew
