Seemed Like a Good Idea...

Had to replace the depth finder as the one that came with the boat was non functional (Fish Finder Screen.. deteriorated in sun)

So I got a nice Hummingbird 600' depth finder with alarms..

When setting in the transducer I noticed this "contraption" holding the unit...
It's a bucket mounted to the hull of the boat filled partially with water...Tucked under port settee...

The transducer is mounted on a hinge with some stainless brackets and will "tilt" or lean when the boat "heels"...Keeping the transducer pointed directly at the bottom rather than off ot one side..and in the water for good transmission/penetration...

Seems like a good Idea so I restored it...

Re: Seemed Like a Good Idea...

OMG! What about a bucket penetrating your hull sounds like a 'good idea'?

Penetrating, that is.

Kinda ingenious. Always gives you real time depth.

mgmhead:
I don't believe there is any hull penetration going on here. This appears to be one the many approaches that allow you not to penetrate the hull with a transducer. These are well-described.

Look at the Photo again, you can see the bucket was cut and glued in place , i have seen this done on a smaller scale with pvc fittings and cooking oil, in an out of the way place like under the V birth, this one you just need to fill the water check the gas and oil and go for it .

Re: Seemed Like a Good Idea...

Hey if it aint broke... and you like the results you get then go for it.

For what it is worth I have had very good results by mounting my fish finder in silicone and shooting through the hull. I have an actual thru hull depth finder that correlates the depth readings on the fish finder quite nicely. I used a similar set up to your bucket to locate a good mounting location for the fish finder transducer.

I don't know hat the effect of healing really makes that much of difference. The error from healing would be most pronounced in deep water when it would also be least important imho.

Re: Seemed Like a Good Idea...

My Grampian 34 (now for sale) has this kind of well built right into the inner hull. Looks original to me.

Works fine as long as your hull is solid. Saves having another hole in the boat. Good idea Squidd!
