sikkens cetol question

I have made new companionway boards from heart pine. I know.....I should have used teak but it''s so costly and I had some very tight grain virgin pine 1x8''s. Anyway...I am trying to determine if cetol would be ok to use on pine or if I should use something else. Any thoughts appreciated...Gary

Gary, a friend was tired of going up his two masts (spruce, I believe) twice a year and revarnishing, so he stripped the main mast and applied Cetol. This was after he and I ran a test with a 4'' pine board for 14 months, to see how different layers of Cetol sealer and sealer + gloss would hold up. It seemed to work well on the board, and he''s satisfied with doing a once/year maintenance run, altho'' in the end I think he just went with the sealer. The spar looked fine and, given the older, darkened varnish on the mizzen, the difference was not that noticeable.

Be sure to carry at least a half gallon of extra mineral oil for the inevitable leaks! After rebedding the PVC twice with epoxy and still mopping up mineral oil off the carpet, I purchased a new transducer and bedded it in epoxy inside the hull. Be careful of air bubbles in the epoxy, but it works great.

I found something i like even better than Cetol. I''ve been using Honey Teak. It looks like varnish and according to Practical Sailor lasts longer than Cetol. I did my hatch boards 1 1/2 years ago and they still look as good as the day i finished and i''m in South Carolina. Our local climate eats varnish very quickly.

PS: Honey teak will work on almost any wood.
