Depthsounder Troubleshooting Help

I may be wasting my time, but...
I have a Horizon DS45 Digital Depth Sounder. I neglected to turn off the DC power and let it run for three days. Now it will turn on, give a reading and then the screen goes blank, no numbers, no dashes, nothing. The first time I tried it, it only displayed data for a few seconds. Today it displayed data for nearly half a minute. Turn it off and back on after a few minutes and I get momentary data. The owners manual's trouble shooting chart is worthless, it does have a schematic but the print is too small for me to read.
What now? Are these repairable? How do I isolate between Transponder and Readout Head failures?
Help?

John--

Look at your owners manual for a hard reset. Typically that involves holding down two of the buttons on the face of the unit while the power supply is off and then having a helper turn on the power to the unit. This will clear out the memory but typically restores the factory pre-sets and the function of the unit. You can then re-set your keel off-set to match your boat.

Having the unit operate for several days shouldn't have any adverse effect. (When we're in the Keys ours runs constantly for days at a time.) You may just need a hard reset to resync you control head to the transducer.

FWIW...

"It is not so much for its beauty that the sea makes a claim upon men's hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air, that emanation from the waves, that so wonderfully renews a weary spirit."

Re: Depthsounder Troubleshooting Help

You might simply have a bad power supply connection. When it first turns on it probably is just starting up the processor and display, so a poor connection gives enough voltage for that. Then when the sounder starts pulsing the higher current drain pulls the voltage down and it shuts off. Check the voltage right at the units power supply connections.
