Good diameter Amsteel for lifelines

I'm swapping out my wire lifelines for Samson's Amsteel on our Olson 30. I've read the IASF regs, and this is at least Cat 3 compliant for monohulls, and I think Cat 1 as well. Most of the boats in my class are using 3/16", but I'm wondering if 1/4" might be better handling... It also would probably last longer, especially if you shield the portions running through the stanchions. Has anyone got any experience with the same issue about line size?

Re: Good diameter Amsteel for lifelines

The smallest dia you can buy is probably strong enough to lift your boat!
So it's not strength that's the limiting factor but other, secondary stuff like cost; colour; thickness cutting through your chest on a beat; etc..

Re: Good diameter Amsteel for lifelines

Thank you, Sam- I figured the old stuff was 1/8", so how bad can almost 1/4" be (3/16")?? The local West Marine has it in stock, but would have to order the 1/4", so it was an easy choice. I'll figure out how to do Brummel splices this weekend x 4!
