I am about to repack the rudder packing gland. Shaft diameter is 2.25". Anyone hazzard a guess as to the flax width I need? I would guess somewhere from 1/4" to 3/8", but manual is silent and too hard to try to measure until I actually open it up. Would be real convenient to have purchased the packing material before hand...........
Thanks in advance........

Unless you can contact the manufacturer or someone else with the same boat who''s done it before, you may want to simply buy a range of sizes so you have them available and return the ones you don''t use.

Mystery is over. 2.25" rudder shaft took 5/16" flax packing. 5 rows. Not that hard to repack either.

Were you in the water or on the hard when you repacked? I''d be most interested in what procedure you used if you were in the water. Thanks, Peter

Boat was on the hard when I repacked the rudder stuffing box. It appears to me that the stuffing box was above or near the waterline and it mostly leaked when under way. However, I was not willing to take the chance and waited until boat was hauled. Discretion and valor........... BTW I am very meticulous, very cautious--and very slow--doing boat projects.
