Balboa 20 original rudder hardware

I am looking for a source for the original rudder hardware for a Balboa 20. If anyone knows where I can get it, please let me know. Note that I am not interested in the rudder itself or the tiller. I am looking for the bronze rudder mounting hardware and/or the rudder head hardware that connects the tiller to the rudder blade.

Thanks!

Re: Balboa 20 original rudder hardware

You can try
http://www.idasailor.com/catalog/def...ce313de234d8c9

I came across this site a couple years ago when I was looking for a tiller. Dont know if they actually have or just build from specs but the $600 they want is quite steep.

The actual factory article involves little bronze. (mostly fiberglas and aluminum plate) and could easily be built from scratch by the DIY'er.

Will post pics and drawings if interested.

Re: Balboa 20 original rudder hardware

Thanks for the responses.

More specifically, I am looking for two heavy-duty bronze rudder gudgeons with a hole size of 1/2" and a rudder opening of 1.5 inches. The length of the tangs should be about 3 inches or longer. I am not too concerned about the number of fasteners since I plan to through-bolt it to the rudder. I can easily accommodate wider openings (within reason) for the rudder blade, but narrower won't work. I can replace the entire mechanism with new hardware for about $100, so the maximum budget for these pieces is about $50 each for a total of $100. Obviously, if I can get them for less than that I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Tom

Re: Balboa 20 original rudder hardware

What started this whole thread is a post I saw by a member named sproption back in 2008. In that post he mentioned that he had a lot of the hardware from both a Balboa 20 and an Ensenada 20. He had to scrap the hull, but he kept a lot of the hardware. As a new member I can't send him a PM, so I started this thread hoping that he would see it and respond.

If you want to look at the original thread, it is titled "Hello from Vermont". Search for that phrase and you will find the thread that I am referring to.

Re: Balboa 20 original rudder hardware

Thanks, Steve!

Denise, I guess it is pretty common, but the bronze stuff that is similar to the original hardware costs about $125 each. I paid $600 for the boat, rigging, and trailer and about $300 for a suit of used sails. I am building a rudder from scratch, so I have a hard time paying $250 for the rudder gudgeons. Especially when I can get new SS to replace it for a total of $100.

Racelite 1/2" Pin Extra Heavy Duty, Pintles & Gudgeons RL-890

Thanks for the links. That Davey and Co. hardware is beautiful stuff.
