Yamaha 8 HP Outboard

After not being used for probably 2 years we tried to start our dink outboard. Changed plugs and cleaned fuel strainer first, of course. No luck. Engine won't start. Also if I try to crank it while in gear the pull cord will not turn the engine. I also found 2 wires inside disconnected that I could not find where they might connect to. Any ideas?

Re: Yamaha 8 HP Outboard

2 or 4 stroke?
If 2 stroke (4 stroke could be a lot of things) it's probably the carb. Take it off and disassemble (not difficult), soak in carb cleaner and blow it clean with compressed air.

Re: Yamaha 8 HP Outboard

"Two wires disconnected"? You might try to see if it is at least getting spark. Take the plug out, put the cap back on it, ground the base of the plug to the engine block or use a jumper wire, and then crank it over. You should see a nice blue spark between the electrodes. If you do it is likely starving for fuel. Spray some gas into the carb intake and see if it fires. As mentioned earlier it is likely the carb has some debris in it.

Re: Yamaha 8 HP Outboard

i would add that gas thats allowed to stand/evaporate in the carb tends to turn into a kind of shilac[sic]and clog the ports, but dabnis is right, checking for fire at the plugs is the easiest and fastest check,if thats not the problem then fuel is he next likely culprit
