iPhone/iPad app with BASIC GPS functions?

Hello all,

I love me some Navionics on my iPhone, but I really miss some of the functionality of the clunky old GPS units, particularly the highway view with the off-course alarms, proximity warnings and so forth. Anybody know of an app that has these old-timey features?

Thanks,
Jeff

Wait ... For highway or marine? For highway I like the Navigon the best. For nautical I've been trying out iSailor as well.

I'm not really sure what you are looking for exactly, but MotionX makes two programs I like. GPS, which has the basic lat/long readings and can record tracks of your sails. These tracks include average speed and pictures if you want. You can email them to yourself or others, or export them to Google Earth.

Drive is their road nav program. I don't use it as much, but it seems pretty good. The best part is neither of them are too spendy.

I'm not looking for a GPS app for driving but for sailing. Programs like Navionics don't seem to have some of the functionality of older GPS units.

For example you can't put two waypoints in and have it calculate velocity made good or the highway view with XREF and how far you are off of the course between two waypoints I'll look at the apps posted here and see if they have these functions. Thanks!

Hi Jeff,

Have you consider using your old GPS and the iOS (aka having the best of both worlds)?

I love my Navionic app as well but I also still use my old GPS. The old GPS provides the nmea input to the iPad (w/Navionics), iPhones, VHF/AIS and radar. We’ve kinda ‘steam-punked the old iPad with the old GPS to provide navigation at the helm but also throughout the boat.
