Palmer P-60 Engine

Hi All,,,,,,,,I have a Islander 30 with a Palmer P-60 engine. Finally getting all the little stuff chased and it's running pretty good. However, the other day, it developed a water leak from the impeller housing. Looking at it in greater detail, beyond where the impeller rides there is a seal behind which is a small hole which is allowing a drip, drip, drip of water when the engine is running. Question: Is the design of this hole to relieve building up from a restriction on the pressure side or is it designed to drain water getting into that chamber before it can mix with oil,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and where might someone find such a seal,,,,,,,,,,,??????
Many Thanks, and Happy Sailing
Rick

The pump needs to be rebuilt. Is there a name on the cover? Hopefully it is a Jabsco

Re: Palmer P-60 Engine

The pump is an older Sherwood, E-20. Probably hasn't been made in years. I've been told that the Oberdorfer takes the same seals. Does anyone know where a guy can get a used water pump or rebuild kit for the Sherwood???
Any help on this will certainly be appreciated,,,,,,,,,,,many thanks,
happy sailing

Your best bet is Moyer Marine: Moyer Marine Atomic 4 Community - Home of the Afourians - Powered by vBulletin
The MMI 501/502 pump would be an upgrade for your engine if you are feeling spendy.
No grease cap fitting.

Best of luck.

Re: Palmer P-60 Engine

You need a new lip seal. Search for "lip seal part number 11628" and you will find several suppliers. Best price I found was at seaboundsupply.com, less than $8. There is another, inner lip seal that protects the bearings, but I'm not sure if it's so easy to get at - part #10859. You should change the impeller at the same time and order a spare - part number 10077. Good luck!
