Garmin 72H max. speed calc

The Viper 640 fleet I sail with give a prize (bottle of nice red) each race to the boat with the highest max. speed - but that max. must be the average over a 10 second duration rather than the absolute max from a single point.

I have a Garmin 72H handheld unit which can display a "max. speed" but I don't know the basis upon which the value is calculated.

Does anyone know whether the time period set by the user in the Speed Filter field in Setup (say 10 sec's) affects the maximum speed calculation of the Garmin 72H? (I have asked Garmin Support but the lazy sods just referred me to my well-read Owner's Manual, which is silent on this matter - like it is on many other aspects! )

Thanks

Re: Garmin 72H max. speed calc

IT is instant as i have watched mine many times when i reset for every sail

Dont feel bad the there are many functions on the unit that work a bit different than the manual

If a dirty bottom slows you down what do you think it does to your boat

Bummer - that means I'll never be eligible to claim the bottle of red as my max. speed reading will not be calculated as an average over 10 seconds!

Thanks anyway
