deck plate key

The fuel and water fill caps on our boat have a star shaped hole that fits a winch handle to open. We are looking for a more convenient and easier to use key so we don't have to carry the winch handle around. Anyone know where I can get one? West Marine catalog only has the keys for the deck caps with two holes in them.

Re: deck plate key

you might find a garboard plug wrench. It looks like an alllen wrench but has 4 sides.

Re: deck plate key

Could you not replace the caps with ones that use the standard 2 hole key?

Re: deck plate key

I've see them in Europe and they have been on a couple of charter boats that I've sailed, so they are available but I haven't seen them in the US.

Davis claim that their universal key also opens winch handle deck plates although it's not obvious how.

We've got a universal key works great on two hole and straight caps however not yet tried it in a winch handle cap. there are many different size slots that would fit many different size anything on the universal key

Holland Marine Products, Missasagua Ontario

Page 422 of their online catalog has exactly what you're looking for. Only $8.50. Has a hole on the handle to attach a lanyard or float.

This place seems to be a well kept secret in the states. I have ordered from them and they are great to do business with. I believe they are sailors themselves as they really seem to have it together. Along with a great general offering of gear, they have selected parts and equipment for older Canadian built boats (like mine). That's what got me interested in them in the first place. Their online catalogue is awesome! Check it out.

Re: deck plate key

Hardware stores carry short lengths of square steel called key stock. You might find a piece the right size and bend it into an 'L'. Or square tubing.
