Is there any reason I can't cut the cord....

My new to me boat has no stereo. Boat $$ are low for the next couple of months. Is there any reason I can't cut the cord on this Ipod player and add a cigarette lighter type plug onto this puppy? The big fat a.c. plug thingy says 13volt d.c. I have been charging it and bringing it to the boat, but its a few years old now and the battery ain't what it used to be. Here is the product:

Thanks

You can give it a shot, but the A/C power adapter outputs a consistent 13vdc whereas your boat power could be anywhere from 12v to 14v. That may or may not be a problem.

Your other option would be to buy a small power inverter that plugs in to your 12v outlet and outputs 110v. You can get them for under $20. That way you still have the option of plugging in your ipod dock at home.

You need to know what the voltage output of your units battery is, as the 13v you mention in the charging unit will be quite a bit higher to allow it to charge the battery. I would give it a go as the voltage is not that dissimilar and the battery should take up any difference.

This might help...

I did a write up on how to hotwire an iPhone/pod into a car stereo and how to hardwire a power supply.

My batteries are are new so the stay around 12.4, with the engine running the system shows 13.4. I guess I'll give it a shot

12.4 sounds a little low for full charge, no?

Rob, I have the exact same unit, however it got wet a while ago and doesn't work. I still have the unit (and the power cord). If you want the power cord so you can try your idea, I can send it to you. PM me and we can make arrangements.
