What is this steering gear?

Can anyone tell me what this steering gear is? The nut that holds the wheel (apart from me) has the letters D A separated by an anchor. The below decks gear isn't like anything else I have ever seen. It appears to be some kind of enclosed rack and pinion. Is the manufacturer still in business?

Part 2: Any idea how to lubricate it? I don't see any kind of zerk fitting or any other way to get grease in...

Thanks!

Possibly "Don Allen" gear. Out of business many years ago.

Re: What is this steering gear?

Thanks! I think you are right. I only get a few hits on Google for "Don Allen rack and pinion" (aside from a Chevy dealership). At least I know what it is now, even if that doesn't help me figure out how to fix it.

Since your bio sez you sail a Catalina 30, have you contacted them? They have a good reputation for assisting owners of their boats, regardless of vintage.

Re: What is this steering gear?

I thought since it's the weekend I would try here first. (The Internet never takes a day off.) On Monday I will see if Catalina can offer any help.
