Should an autopilot be this loud?

I just installed a Simrad WP32 on my boat. I don't think it was ever used, but it is several years old. Does anyone know if they should be this loud or if I should take it apart and attempt to lube something.

Thanks.

Re: Should an autopilot be this loud?

We have an Autohelm 4000 - different unit but same principle. It sounds just like that. Recently noticed the belt was going bad. Took it apart and discovered a couple of the little wheels the hub rides on were broken. (Who knows - maybe I broke them during dis-assembly?) Anyway, I repaired the wheels and it quieted down quite a bit. I have a new belt on order. I'll see if that helps.

My X-5 Smartpilot makes just about that much noise, but it is more like a creaking sound.
