AIS for Laptop

I downloaded an app for my android phone that does a nice job of showing AIS signals on the NOAA charts I have loaded. I'm amazed that I can get this, basically, for free. I have considered replacing my VHF with one equiped with AIS but it seems that using a laptop might be the best option due to screen size etc. Does anyone know of, and could recommend, an AIS reciever that plugs into a Windows laptop that is relatively inexpensive? Thanks.

I've only been able to locate one AIS dongle out there:

Radar Gadgets - AIS marine radio receiver - Virtual Radar

You may have to do some searching to find it depending on where you live.

I have an ACR Nauticast AIS receiver that has USB and NMEA 0183 output. I've been quite happy with its performance and it tends to be one of the least expensive receivers out there.

The Digital Yacht AIS Smart Antenna also looks very intriguing as it's a complete unit with a built in antenna. The ACR unit requires an external antenna - which is not necessarily a bad thing if you want the antenna mounted high.

What Android app did you download?

Re: AIS for Laptop

It's called Marine Traffic. I just looked and the cost is $3.95.
It's a great app and works very well.

However, I have been doing some research recently on how it works as well as VHF radios that have AIS built in and separate AIS receivers. I've learned quite a bit but am still far from an expert.
I believe:
1. The app has it limitations. It only works insland or near shore. That's because it depends on shore based antennas to receive the signals.
2. It requires internet since the signals are transmitted out over the internet.

Of course, even with a good VHF AIS antenna and receiver, AIS still has it's limitations. So having the phone app is better than nothing and I consider it pretty handy for the boating I do on the Chesapeake.
