Replacing stuffing box flax with GFO - sizing?

I'm leaving for Canada on Wednesday and I want to buy some GFO Gortex stuffing for my prop shaft stuffing box while I'm there. I can't find the good stuff in Brazil. I don't have time to go down to the boat to measure my stuffing box and was wondering if anyone knew the correct diameter stuffing for a 1 inch prop shaft. I seem to have a standard looking stuffing box (with 2 nuts). Does anyone know what diameter stuffing I should buy?

Thanks in advance!

After checking a few sites it seems to be 1/4 inch diameter for a 1 inch prop shaft. Does this sound right?

1" prop shaft here, with Atomic 4 engine.
3/16" packing is what I use. 1/4" is too tight.

Thanks Caleb. I'll pick up a pack of 3/16 as well, just to be on the safe side.

I haven't found the gortex packing (GFO) that I want, but I did find this:

"Western Pacific PTFE Packing

Two foot length. PTFE Flax Packing is braided from strong rovings and impregnated with PTFE. This combination offers higher performance and longer packing life. PTFE impregnated flax packing ensures a drip-free stuffing box and leak-free propeller shaft."

Has anyone used this stuff? I'm guessing it's not the gortex packing I'm looking for, but is it any good?

If you haven't seen this it is worth a look/read: Re-Packing A Traditional Stuffing Box Photo Gallery by Compass Marine at pbase.com

He mentions the different kinds of packing GTU vs GFO etc.

They are similar but not identical.

Re: Replacing stuffing box flax with GFO - sizing?

I never attempt ANY maintenance without first checking Mainsail's site to see if he has a tutorial on it!!

I managed to secure the GFO packing in FLA and someone is bringing it to me in Canada. I'm hoping to replace the packing when I get back to Brazil in September. My stuffing box has a grease gun that forces grease into the stuffing nut where the flax is. The idea is that it lubricates and seals at the same time. It is currently dripping a tiny bit, but I hope with the new GFO stuffing to have a truly drip-free stuffing box.

Re: Replacing stuffing box flax with GFO - sizing?

buying expensive packings does not guarantee drip free environment.

Stuffing box must have drips 1 or 2 per min, otherwise packing itself will create serious heat until packing completely incinerates inside of your stuffing box and it is going to be very nasty at the end. Depending on material, some burns or sticks to your shaft like hardened amalgam and I guarantee you will spend half a day squatted under the stuffing box to get that packing out.
