Hang a canoe?

I hope this is the right forum to ask sort of an odd question.

My husband and I have a Catalina 320 and I just bought a used one-person outrigger canoe. I'd like to find a way to attach it to the side of the boat so we can take it with us when we do overnight trips. It's 22 feet long and made of fiberglass. I have seen kayaks hanging from the side of sailboats before, but not sure the best way to do this. I've looked at mounting systems but they all attach to a wall. Does anyone hand their kayak or canoe from their boat? I'd love any tips I could get.

22 feet is pretty long, so I can only imagine the weight. Additionally hanging a canoe off the side will restrict sailing on the opposite tack. I sail the Chesapeake and tow a 17' canoe off the stern. You will most likely have to drill and install a towing ring low on the bow of your canoe to keep it from diving.

Thank you for the info. It's actually quite light. I can easily lift it over my head. But maybe it's not the most practical idea to take it. I prefer not to tow it because it's pretty fragile.

Just a thought, but you might be able to secure it to the mast, like a spin-pole. You'd have to figure a way to fix the pointy end to the deck.

Hmmm, that is an idea.

I misspoke earlier, it's made of carbon fiber not fiber glass. I just checked the weight and it's 20 pounds.

Get a big piece of packing foam and use it to help cushion the nose while it's attached to the mast as per the previous posters suggestion. Also the tow ring idea might allow you to support the upright canoe using a spare halyard if you've got one.

A smaller boat, like a kayak could easily be kept on the fore deck and not compromise the rigging.

Re: Hang a canoe?

Ideally you would want to stow it on deck secured to the lifeline stanchions, but 22 ft is a bit long, so you may not clear your shrouds. If it is as light as you say, then you could easily hang it on the outside, but that would be inadvisable unless you weren't planning on sailing!

Canoes do not tow very well at all...ask me how I know!:laugher
