Topping lifts revisited

Was wondering if lazy jacks (which I have) would be an acceptable substitute for the topping lift?

Usually not. The geometry and materials used in most sets of lazyjacks do not provide the same level of support to the boom.

I''ll second that "no".

We use our "spare" main halyard as our topping lift. so it all comes back to the cockpit and means we have an emergency backup in case the main halyard goes in a seaway (I do not feel like going up the mast in those cicumstances).

The other option is a boom vang that acts as a rigid support for the boom. There are a number on the market where the pulley system is encased in an aluminium arm and you do not need to go over to hydraulics.
