Fresh Water Pump turns on with faucets closed

The pump started kicking-in, even when the faucets were closed. I added water to the tank, thinking it might be low but it's doing the same thing. So we're now using the circut breaker to turn the pump on and off. Yesterday, it started spitting air and now, very little water is coming out.

You have a leak. Try looking at connections first as they will be easiest to fix.
Ever since I lost a hose on the water heater and pumped all the fresh water into the bilge I make it a standard procedure to keep the breaker off when not using a faucet, it is just another item to check before heading out on a crossing now.

Hello there, Depending on the type of water pump that you have, if you don't find any leaks there could be a problem with a pressure switch or a check valve. Good advice is to keep the circuit breaker off when not in use as said previously. The fact that it's sucking air leads me to believe you have a bad check valve or is dirty and not working properly. It is important to note what kind of pump it is before making a diagnosis.... Captg

You may have torn the diaphragm in the pump as well. Ask me how I know.

If that is type you have the diaphragm pump housing can often be replaced. However, mine stand verticle and the leaking housing flooded the motor too. New pump.

Re: Fresh Water Pump turns on with faucets closed

From me from this summer four weeks ago - the quickest way to fix it.

Ours started doing it on our three week trip down the coast of Maine. I checked all the hoses - no leaks. I made sure the take was full, still cycled on and off. We turned if off at the circuit breaker when not in use until we got to Rockland. A quick walk up to Hamilton Marine and I purchased a new one. Got it back to the boat - took it out of the box and read all the instructions. Put it back in the box to install the next day at Warren Island State Park.

The old one never again cycled on and off when it wasn't supposed to. From that point on, it has worked flawlessly.

I'm out a hundred bucks, but the up side is I have a great "spare" fresh water pump if the old one misbehaves again.

If you have no leeks and the pump is a number of years old pull the diaphragm apart and on the back you will find a tit that pushes up against a switch which sits inside a plastic hole cut a little piece of thin plastic {I used a plastic business card} put in hole put it all back together. Mine is not quite as sensitive, but off is off. Sureflow was my brand.

Re: Fresh Water Pump turns on with faucets closed

If the pump is sucking air and the tank level is not falling--there is a leak above the tank and air is getting into the pump. My pump switches off when water pressure builds up but it will not always do so if the tank has emptied and allowed air into the pump. Before you dismantle your pump, check the connections to the pump first. Then check the in-line filter and the connections to it, and then the connection and hose to the tank. I replaced all of mine because they were a bit old. Problem was solved.

If you turn the taps on full and let water gush out into the sink, then turn the tap off quickly the pump shoild shut off. but if it does not after you have checked the hoses above tank level, you are going to have to fix the shut-off switch on the pump. Some are solid state and some work on a micro switch. Good luck!

My diaphragm was OK Problem was tiny crack in hose--just enough to let a few bubbles into the pressure switch.
