Repaint for boat bottom

I just purchased a 1971 Paceship Northwind. The bottom is very faded and worn with some chipping. Will it hurt the boat hull if it goes back in the water for the season? Or will it just affect perfomance? Would it help if I just added another coat of paint on top of the old stuff and did a correct job in the fall? How would I be able to tell which paint it had on it now?
Any tips are appreciated.

Joe,
Your not supposed to apply non-ablative (hard)paint over an ablative paint so, if you dont know what kind of paint is on the boat, apply two coats of an ablative paint after sanding off the oxidation and scraping the loose paint on the chips back to good paint.Loss of performance will be very minimal.
As for splashing the boat without any bottom work? Don''t do it.
It won''t hurt the boat but the oxidation will not allow the paint to work.
