2005 Yamaha 9.9 high thrust: looking for suggestions on PM

I have a Yamaha 9.9 high thrust, purchased new in 2005. We used it for under 100 hrs on a 25' sailboat, so it is barely broken in. We stored the boat under cover for several years and now are getting ready to start using it again and trailer it to Florida. It started right up and runs fine, but I was told we should change the water pump impeller just to be safe. The water streams seem OK, but was told we could end up with bits of rubber clogging cooling channels.

Should we change the impeller, and how hard would it be to do my self? I am not a mechanical clutz, but have never dropped the lower unit of an outboard and the local shop says it can be a mess.
