Hawse Pipe

What is the best deck mounted hawse pipe? The one I have has the lid held on by a chain and it does not stay in place, letting spray into the boat. Are the hinged ones any good? I have seen pictures of people using a dorade vent as a hawse pipe. Is that a good idea?
Thanks for your help.

Re: Hawse Pipe

When you say you get spray in the boat, is the anchor locker exposed to the interior of the boat? If so, I would address that by blocking it off. Hawse pipe's can not be weather proof and chain lockers are usually designed to drain. In fact, I prefer water get down there to help clear dirt from the chain.

Re: Hawse Pipe

I have a hinged one and sometimes it works open with the chain blocking it up slightly. I've thought about replacing it with one like you have! (But there are many more things ahead on The List.)

If you have enough weight from the chain hanging on the cap, it should keep the hawse pipe closed. I've thought about brazing a hook onto mine for just this purpose.

Re: Hawse Pipe

Minnewaska,
The anchor locker has a large opening in the V berth, but basically it drains into the bilge. However the forward bilge is not open to main bilge (nor is the aft bilge). Some P28 owners have installed nice cabinet doors to close off the anchor locker from the V berth. I have always tried to clean the chain before lowering it so that mud does not accumulate as it did for the PO.

Plumbean,
That is a good idea to put a chain hook on the cover and let the weight of the chain do the work.
