Safety & Rescue Thesis
 
Hi there,
I am working on a water safety and rescue product design thesis. And as part of my research I was hoping anyone reading this who ventures out into the sea could fill in any of these 4 questions.As much replies as possible is truly helpful. Thanks for your time.

1. Do you use a VHF radio on your vessel?
2. What size and type is your vessel?
3. How far would you normally journey out?
4. Do you know the 3 main benefits of VHF over mobile Phones?

VHF - no, just phone
12 foot rib
2 miles off shore max, mostly use it for diving
Yes I know the benifits.

If you don't mind some critique, your questions are not well constructed for this medium, and any answers posted will skew your results...

I'll try to help you though;
1. Do you use a VHF radio on your vessel? Yes
2. What size and type is your vessel? 35' Sailing Vessel (sloop)
3. How far would you normally journey out? 1-5 miles (from shore)
4. Do you know the 3 main benefits of VHF over mobile Phones?
  1. One to many communication
  2. All vessels equipped with a radio are supposed to maintain a radio watch (i.e. monitor ch 16)
  3. The Coast Guard monitors channel 16
  4. Range can be greater for a well maintained VHF than for a cell.
  5. Cell phones rely on land based antennas to receive your signal (no nearby cell tower, no worky), VHF radios do not.

Choose any three.

3. Up to thirty nms when on coastal passage, five - ten on a daysail.

Normally 10-12 miles
Yes - big advantage I see is the coast guard monitoring/safety aspect, and the ability for everyone in the area to know when someone needs help.

varies
usually coastal, frequently as much as 50 miles offshore. Have done 4 offshore passages.


4. Do you know the 3 main benefits of VHF over mobile Phones?
eherlihy has a good list; I would add

- free
- Wx channels
- often waterproof
- do not need phone numbers
- GMDSS equipped

Thanks for all the replies. One other big factor which I am investigating is the fact VHF signals can be traced by lifeboat and coast guard but mobile phone signals can not
