Jib furler is hard to furl since putting up new sail...ideas?

My headsail has become VERY hard to furl in. It used to furl in very easily. I put up a new sail that's about 6 inches shorter. Just before that I replaced the worn 1/4" furling line with smaller line. Now the furler is so hard to turn I nearly have to put all my weight into it just to get the jib furled in. I'm going to go back to the old furler line and see if that makes a difference. The new sail is a heavier weight 125 headsail with a thick UV filter on it. The old sail was a lighter weigh 135 without a UV filer on it. My initial thoughts we its harder to furl because its a thicker sail, but it seems to be very hard to furl. Way too difficult. I have lubed the bearings so I don't think it's the actual furling unit. What can I do to make the furler easier to operate other than larger furling line?

My guess is that it's something to do with the new furling line...

Could it be binding on the drum?
Do you need to change the alignment of it as it enters the drum?
Have you missed out one of the guides on the stanchions?
Is it jamming in one of the stanchion guides?

If it's none of those, try adjusting the halyard tension.

Good luck!

Maybe you did not attach the head of the sail correctly? Is the lighter line burying itself on the drum?

It could also have to do with the shorter hoist on the new sail. There is more halyard between the mast exit and the swivel, and it will be at a shallower angle, more parallel to the forestay, and as result it could twist around the forestay.

I suspect this assessment is exactly correct. If your masthead is not fitted with a halyard guide that will maintain a 10 angle between the line of forestay and the line of the halyard, the halyard will wrap. With only a 6" difference there isn't enough halyard for a full wrap that would make it impossible to furl but I suspect you are torquing the poop out of your foil. Make up a pendant for the sails tack to allow the head to reach closer to the masthead and I suspect your problem will be solved. Better yet, take trip up the mast and install a halyard guide. The greater the angle between the halyard and the forestay the better up to about 15.

FWIW...

Exactly what I was thinking -- you have a halyard wrap on the forestay.

Sounds like a Halyard wrap at the top, much less angle with the shorter sail.

I had the exact same issue as you, and turned out it was halyard wrap. Solved it, and all is back to normal.

The last time I experienced a nearly "impossible to furl" headsail; I slowly figured out that the problem was that I had 'reeved the furling line through the ratchet block by the cockpit in the wrong direction.' Re-reeving through the ratchet block in the correct direction restored the easy furling feature.;)

I also thought halyard wrap when I read your post. Try dropping your sail and see how the furler behaves without the sail on it.
