Looking at a P30 with frozen westerbeast. Haven''t dug very deep. Diesels don''t scare me. I figured starting with Marvel Mystery Oil and doing a crankshaft-up rebuild as I did with my old Volvo MD2B. I can get the engine out of the boat pretty easy. Generally speaking, and without more, how do anyone feel about the Westerbeke? Tempted to toss it if it isn''t cooperative, add an outboard bracket and have the boat rated for racing engineless. Might get a little TOO tender, though. Whaddaya t''ink? Where do I go for parts, manuals and guidance? Thanks for input.

V:

I''d call the folks at Westerbeke - or use their helpful website - to learn if the W model you''re looking at is eligible for parts (www.westerbeke.com) and then I''d call Trans Atlantic Diesel (nice folks, seem to have oodles of spare parts for older engines) if the W answer is a disappointing one.

A P30 with an outboard? No, I don''t think so...

That would''ve been my guess. I can probably come up with a Yanmar 2GM that would do the job. I''m excited about ramping this boat up for Caribbean racing, though, and getting ready for next year. The price is right, and I''ve got another boat for cruising and a 28'' "Moonie" center console I shipped down from Newport for fishing. I hate the boatyard after about a month, but for some reason, I just can''t bring myself to pay someone else to work on my boats. It is truly a sickness.

Go to the A4 website at www.moyermarine.com and search that site for: Marvel Mystery Oil "Spa". If just the piston rings and valves are frozen sometimes (more often than not) a MMO soak and very gentle ''persuasion'' will break the engine free. Many times a frozen engine ''deeply'' soaked in MMO will break free and not need a rebuild. If you "force it'' to turn over you will inevitably break the rings.

Keep those cards and letters coming. I''m no expert, but I figured I could rebuild the Volvo MD2B as well as the drooling mechanic that offered to in Maine a few years ago for $1200 plus parts. It was useful and educational and actually quite easy. Thanks for the lead. We''ll let you know if I get anywhere with it - or otherwise. ''Course, there''s always the tendency to force. Now I''ll be thinking about that. Thanks again.
