Making a Rudder

I have a 15' sailboat with an old rudder that is totally shot. The old rudder was fiberglass over plywood. So I copied the old one as a template onto a piece of 3/4" high quality plywood, cut out the pattern and shaped the wood. Now I am ready to put a layer of fiberglass over the plywood. Once that is done I will need to sand it smooth and apply some sort of protective finish, probably a good marine paint. I am not excited about using GelCoat since it is tricky to work with and to try and get a good result the first time,as well as the fact that it is expensive and I only need a small quantity anyway. Will a marine paint suffice to protect the new rudder from water under light sailing conditions and useage? The boat will be kept on a trailer except when I'm day sailing.

Re: Making a Rudder

Paint will be just fine. I'd use a 1 part polyurethane since the boat is being dry sailed. Just make sure those edges are well sealed.

Re: Making a Rudder

I'm not sure I would worry about glass cloth...just a few coats of epoxy resin, then a couple coats of paint should do it. You can always spruce it up with a little sanding and paint as needed.
